Comments and Annotations

This song, by glorifying the mounts and rills in the region of Yue and by eulogizing the natives’ talent, expresses the pride of the Yue people.

The earliest versions of this song appeared in print successively in Chronicles of the Three Qins (《三秦记》,written by a scholar of the Jin Dynasty, whose surname is Xin), and Anthology of Anecdotes and Stories (《语林》) written by He Liangjun(何良俊, 1506—1573). Du Wenlan (杜文澜, 1815—1881) of the Qing Dynasty gave it the title in light of Comments on and Criticisms of Classics (《说文长笺》) by Zhao Huanguang (赵宦光, 1559—1625).
