Comments and Annotations
This song is cited from the 66th page of History of Zhejiang Songs and Ballads by Zhu Qiufeng. It had circulated in the central part of the present Zhejiang during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. It was first recorded in The Illustrious of Kuaiji (《会稽典录》) by Yu Yu (虞预, appr. 285-340). It extols Xu Shengtong, the magistrate of the Ruying County (i.e. the present Hefei) in the Jin Dynasty, for his unique government. As soon as he assumed his post, Xu Shengtong took steps to check the power and influence of the local despots, thus restoring social order and peace. For more information please refer to Zhu Qiufeng’s History of Zhejiang Songs and Ballads (pp. 65—67).
