Hymn to Emperor Gaoxin

Anonymous

Having created the sky, the earth and the world,

Th’ Yellow River with nine turns Pangu does design;

Ere enthroning th’ Three Emperors注1 in succession,

注1:The “Three Emperors” are honorable titles denoting the three distinguished chieftains of the primitive society, i.e. Fuxi (伏羲氏, God of Human Beings and Changes), Shennong (神农氏, God of Earth and Agriculture) and Xuanyuan (黄帝, Emperor Huang) rather than “emperors” in the proper sense.

He makes the sun and th’ moon, which from th’ east to th’ west shine.

He creates farmland for growing crops of all kinds;

In order men can move about he blazes roads.

He enthrones emperors to govern the people,

And he figures out surnames as people’s codes.
