5 Education in Zunyi and Meitan

On November 25, 1939, Nanning, Guangxi fell into enemy hands. Zhejiang University was no longer safe in Yishan. Thus, after investigating new sites in places like Zunyi in Guizhou and Jianshui in Yunnan, the final decision was made that the University would move to Zunyi and Meitan of Guizhou Province. Students and teachers of Zhejiang University arrived in Zunyi in January 1940. The picture shows the overall view of Zunyi (taken in 1940).

In January 1940, Zhejiang University established a campus for freshmen in Qingyan, a town south of Guiyang City, and the Branch Campus was then moved to Yongxing of Meitan in October. The picture shows the site of the former Campus of Qingyan at Longquan Temple (taken in the 1980s).

The school buildings of Zhejiang University in Meitan were arranged in May 1940. Headed by Yan Fuquan, county head, an association for the purpose of aiding Zhejiang University's migration was founded and president and professors of the University were invited to take part in discussions. Meitan offered more than 250 rooms and public houses like the Confucian Temple, House for Mass Education and Relief Institute to Zhejiang University for carrying out its education. It was also decided that Meitan Middle School should be combined with the Experimental School of Zhejiang University to improve the local education with the excellent teachers of the University. Fei Gong (1905-1945)

An educator in Camparative Political Studies. He had started teaching in Zhejiang University since 1933 and successively became a professor in political science and economics. For pursuing democracy, he was secretly abducted by Kuomintang agents in 1945 and killed at the age of 40.

Shu Hong (1894-1964)

An educator in physical education. He worked in Zhejiang University since 1934 as a professor, director of Department of Physical Education and dean of general affairs. In 1936, Shu served as chief referee in the basketball final of the 11thOlympiad.

Hu Gangfu (1892-1966)

A physicist and educator. He worked as a professor, dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, dean of College of Science in Zhejiang University from 1936 to 1949. He made great contribution to helping President Chu to arrange and organize the migration of the university.
