Mommy

Where did you go after school today, Pat?

Pat

Mommy

Really? Was it interesting? What did you see there?

Pat

There were lots of interesting animals in the pet shop. Lee and I looked at all the animals in the shop.

Mommy

Did you buy any?

Pat

Yes, we did.

Mommy

What did you buy? And please don’t tell me Lee bought a pet snake!

Pat

No, Mommy. Lee didn’t buy a snake. They didn’t have any snakes. Lee wanted to buy a pet rat, but the shop didn’t have any rats, so Lee looked at some of the other animals.

Mommy

Which other animals did he look at?

Pat

He looked at rabbits, cats, dogs, birds and fish.

Mommy

And which ones did he like?

Pat

He liked the dogs, but we didn’t buy a dog. We have a dog already.

Mommy

What about you? Which animals did you like?

Pat

Oh, I liked the birds. And I really liked the parrots. Some of those parrots can speak.

Mommy

So which pets did Daddy buy for you?

Pat

He bought a parrot for me, and he bought some fish for Lee.

Mommy

Really? Were they expensive? I think parrots that can speak cannot be cheap.

Pat

That’s right. The parrot was expensive, but the fish were not. The fish were cheap.

Mommy

I see. Well, now you will have to learn how to look after your new pets, won’t you?

Pat

Yes, I know. I’m going to look after my pet parrot very well, and every day I’m going to try to teach it to speak more English.
