One Thing Missing

Old Mrs. King lived alone in a small cottage（别墅）in the country. She preferred a very simple life and hardly talked with the outside world. The nearest town was many kilometres away. One day a car stopped outside her cottage and a young man got out. He took a large paper box out of the back of the car and carried it to her front door. Then he put the box down and rang the bell. As soon as Mrs. King opened the door, the young man started talking.

“Good morning, madam. What a lovely cottage you have. You must spend a lot of time keeping it so clean.”The young man opened the paper box and took out a vacuum cleaner（吸尘器）and said, “With this machine, you can clean your house in a little time.”“Well, yes, but...”Mrs. King began, but the young man interrupted（打断）her.

“I will show it to you, ”he said, and before she could stop him he walked into the house. He put the paper box on the floor and took out a huge bag. He opened the bag and poured a smelly mixture（有臭味的混合物）all over the floor.“Please, you mustn't...”Mrs. King protested（抗议）, but he did not listen.“Don't worry, ”he said, as he stamped the dirt into the carpet with his foot and then spread it all over the carpet.“This machine will clean it away in seconds. This is the finest vacuum cleaner in the world. You just need to tell me where the socket is. Look at it carefully, please.”“But I've been trying to tell you, ”the old lady said.“There isn't any electricity in this cottage! ”
