Section Three Expressing Opinions

Part A Situational Dialogues

Dialogue 1

Background:The secretary Cathy Lee asks the boss Mr.Smith what to do today and airs her opinion on the cost of the advertising campaign.

A:Cathy Lee B:Mr.Smith

A:Mr. Smith, what shall I do today?

B:I need to figure out the cost of the advertising campaign.

A:OK. I'll be able to get the figures.

B:What do you think of paying the expenses?

A:The cost seems to be very worthy. Our sales have been promoted up to 30%.

B:That's right.

A:But if the company wants to continue the contract with the advertising agent, I recommend we should not accept their bid.

B:Why do you say so?

A:In my opinion, the study is necessary. The data from them are not reliable.

B:Oh, let me have a look.

Dialogue 2

Background:The sales figures of the new products are not satisfactory, as to which Mr. Smith and Cathy Lee give their opinions separately.

A:Mr.Smith B:Cathy Lee

A:It seems that the sales figures of our new products after the launching have not been quite satisfactory.

B:I don't think the R&D department has made enough market research.

A:I can't go along with you there. It's just that sales promotion isn't being well done. How do you see it then?

B:I'm afraid I'm not convinced.

A:We are not here to argue whose responsibility it is. Can we figure out a solution to our problem?

B:I think our product is out of date. Can we make it more fashionable?

A:I don't see eye to eye with you on this.

B:I think this is the best way possible to increase our sales volume.

A:OK. Maybe we can try part of our products.

Dialogue 3

Background:The smokers often smoke in the office. Cathy Lee thinks it is harmful but Paul thinks it is inescapable, so they argue about it.

A:Cathy Lee B:Paul

A:I think we should not allow smoking in our office because it's harmful to us.

B:I see your point. The problem is most of us are smokers and need to smoke when working.

A:I don't think so. We can help them to quit smoking by forbidding it in the office.

B:I don't agree. We should get too much complaint if such a rule is set.

A:You are just protecting the smokers because you yourself are one of them. What about those non-smokers like me?

B:I'm really not sure about this. Maybe we should discuss it openly with all the people in our office.

Tips for Winning Career Games

Quit When Needed. If you think you are in danger of losing your job, take control of your situation and ask for a meeting.Tell your boss you want to make sure you are communicating and doing your job to everyone's satisfaction. If your boss is a sadist, or just a lousy communicator, you've got a problem. In that case, fire your boss and get a better job.

Fine-tune Your Timing. When it comes to your career, certain moves shouldn't be made without consideration of the old and apt saying“Timing is everything”.The best way to ask for a rise is to wait for the right time.It indicates that you have a certain amount of discernment and appreciation for what your boss might be going through. If your boss was having an especially tough, vicious day, would you approach him for a rise?

Go With Your Gut. To be a success at anything, you have to trust yourself. You may have superb academic credentials, but without instincts you will have a hard time reaching the top. This is one of those grey areas that remain an enigma even to those who have finely honed business instincts. There are inexplicable signs that can guide you to or away certain deals or certain people.

Keep Critics in Perspectives. In any job, you'll be criticized at some point. There is a smart way to assess criticism.First consider the source.Should this person's opinion matter to you?If it does, take a few minutes to consider if you can learn from the criticism.Others often see things you've overlooked. Then, understand that everyone has an opinion and that if people didn't find you interesting enough, they wouldn't be taking the time to criticize you in the first place.

All Ideas Are Welcome. If you are going to be bold enough to present an idea, make it as clear as possible and don't take it casually.Think of it as a presentation that could cost your company money if you were to lose the client.Your boss's time is important:You won't win points by wasting it.Also, remember this:The boss has the big picture;you don't.If your idea does not meet with hurrahs, it could be that a similar idea is already in development, or your idea is not in step with plans that have already been made. This shouldn't discourage you because your initiative will always be noticed. Most bosses like people who do not give up.But being merely a pest is detrimental to everyone.Know when to ease up.Keep your eyes open for another idea and a more appropriate opportunity.

Reading Comprehension

Directions:Decide whether the following statements are true or false according to the text.
