On the Rhetoric Device of Parallelism in the Creation of Couplets

Abstract: In the creation of couplets, if the unilateral line(the first line or the second line)uses parallelism, another corresponding line should follow suit. The parallelism in the unilateral line ranges from an orderly style to an intricate one. The intricate parallelism, whose sentence length changes with emotion, meaning and rhythm, once used well, can achieve a better emphatic effect. The corresponding parallelism items of the first and second line can be in an antithetical form, or take the form of “one -sided self-parallelism”. Parallelism can establish an incessant pouring force, but a good couplet should wind up its force at the end, and keep its implications at the same time. So it tends to wind up in a summary or deepening mode.
