2 John Milton: Paradise Lost

Excerpt 1 Book I, Lines84—124

If thou beest he“If you were he”. Here Satan is talking to Beelzebub, his chief follower in rebellion against God.“He”refers to the Beelzebub before his fall from heaven.—but O how fallen! How changed

From him, who in the happy realms of light

Clothed with transcendent brightness, didst outshine

Myriads,“Myriads” is a poetical word, meaning“ten thousand” or “an infinitely great number”. though bright! —if he,i.e.“if thou beest he”, as at the beginning. whom mutual league,i.e.the alliance with each other.

United thoughts and counsels, equal hope

And hazard in the glorious enterprise,Or the scheme to challenge and overthrow God.

Joined with me once, now misery hath joined

In equal ruin—into what pit thou seest

From what height fall'n, so much the stronger proved

He with His thunder. In the Battle of Heaven, God defeated Satan by using thunder as a powerful weapon. And till then who knew

The force of those dire arms?i.e.those dreadful weapons of war(thunder)used by God in the Battle of Heaven. Yet not for those,

Nor what the potent victori.e.the powerful conqueror or winner, referring to God. in his rage

Can else inflict, do I repent, or change

(Though changed in outward luster)that fixed mind

And high disdain from sense of injured merit

That with the Mightiest raised me to contend,That raised me to contend(fight)with the Mightiest(God).

And to the fierce contentions brought along

Innumerable force of Spirits armed,“Spirits armed” is “armed spirits or angels”, referring to Satan's followers in the rebellion against God.

That durst dislike His reign, and, me preferring,

His utmost power with adverse power opposed

In dubious battlei.e.battle in which it is doubtful as to which side will win. on the plains of heav'n,

And shook His throne. What though the field be lost

All is not lostthe unconquerable will

And study ofrevenge, immortal hate

And courage never to submit or yield:

And what is else not to be overcome? What other things cannot be conquered? Or“If these can be overcome, all others will be, too.”

That glory never shall his wrath or might

Extort from me.To bow and sue for grace

With suppliant knee, and deify His power

Who, from the terror ofthis arm, so late

Doubted His empire—that were low indeed,

That were an ignominy and shame beneath

This downfall,i.e.a more shameful thing than this defeat. The italics are given by the compiler in order to highlight the pride and spirits of the revolutionary Satan. since, by fate, the strength of gods,

And this empyreal substance,This fiery essence made of the highest heaven.Here Satan is boasting himself as being made of heavenly substance. “Empyreal” means “of pure fire”, and “substance” is equal to “essence”. cannot fail;

Since, through experience of this great event,i.e.the battle between God and Satan, like the “glorious enterprise” mentioned above.

In arms not worse, in foresight much advanced,

We may with more successful hope resolve

To wage by force or guile eternal war,

Irreconcilable to our grand Foe,“our grand Foe” is here also referring to God.

Who now triumphs, and in th' excess of joy

Sole reigning holds the tyranny of Heav'n.

辉煌无比,群星之中也无双;

让我沮丧,叫我一改初衷;

目空一切的傲气却丝毫没有改变;

Excerpt 2 Book IV, Line639—656

With thee conversing I forget all time;

All seasons and their change, all please alike.

Sweet is the breath of morn, her rising sweet,

With charmi.e.blended song, of multiple origin. of earliest birds.Pleasant the sun,

When first on this delightful land he spreads

His orienti.e.bright, brilliant. beams, on herb, tree, fruit, and flow'r,

Glistening with dew.Fragrant the fertile earth

After soft showers, and sweet the coming on

Of gratefulHere “grateful” means “pleasing” or “pleasant”. evening mild, then silent night,

With this her solemn bird, and this fair moon,

And these the gems of Heav'n, her starry train.

But neither breath of morn, when she ascends

With charm of earliest birds, nor rising sun

On this delightful land, nor herb, fruit, flow'r,

Glistening with dew, nor fragrance after showers,

Nor grateful ev'ning mild, nor silent night,

With this her solemn bird, nor walk by moon,

Or glittering star-light, without thee is sweet.

肥沃富饶的大地芳香流淌;

Excerpt 3 Book XII, Line624—649

So spoke our mother Eve, and Adam heard

Well pleased, but answered not.For now, too high

The Arch-Angel stood and, and from the other hill

To their fixed station, all in bright array

The Cherubim descended, …(Lines 629—636)………………………………Whereat

In either hand the hast'ning Angel caught

Our ling'ring parents, and to the eastern gate

Led them direct, and down the cliffs as fast

To the subjected plain, then disappeared.i.e.then the angel(and his troops)disappeared. In the previous lines, “Ling'ring” or lingering, means “reluctant, tardy, dawdling”, and “subjected” means “lying below”.

They looking back, all th' eastern side beheld

Of Paradise, so late their happy seat,

Waved over by that flaming brand, the gate

With dreadful faces thronged and fiery arms.

Some natural tears they dropped, but wiped them soon.

The world was all before them, where to choose

Their place of rest, and Providence their guide.

They hand in hand, with wand'ring steps and slow,

Through Eden took their solitary way.

Topics for discussion

1.What is considered by Satan to be “ignominy” and “shame”(line 115)?

2.What is Satan advising his followers to do in this part of Paradise Lost

3.What, according to Excerpt II, is the relationship between Adam and Eve?

4.Can you make a comparison between the excerpt and a sonnet(as the one in the following), either the Italian or the English?

Milton wrote 23 English sonnets, and here we have the Sonnet No.22.which may be translated as“哀失明”。

To Cyriack Skinner

Cyriack, this three years day these eyes, though clear,

To outward view of blemish or of spot,

Berefti.e.is deprived of sight. of light, their seeing have forgot,

Nor to their idle“Idle” here means “useless, inactive, unemployed”. orbs doth sight appear

Of sun, or moon, or star, throughout the year,

Or man, or woman.Yet I argue not

Against Heav'n's hand or will, nor bate a jot“Bate” means “lessen, reduce” and “jot” means “the smallest amounts”.

Of heart or hope, but still bear up and steer

Right onward. What supports me, dost thou ask?

The conscience, friend, t' have lost them overpliedi.e.overworked, employed or worked, used.

In liberty's defence, my noble task,

Of which all Europe rings(talks)from side to side.

This thought might lead me through the world's vain mask,

Content, though blind, had I no better guide.
