Student Club Spotlight: Overseas Travel Club

The Overseas Travel Club is one of the cultural and international clubs at Cazenovia College. It provides students with opportunities unlike any other club on campus. Students have the opportunity to travel overseas for week-long, life-changing trips. Each year, the student club president and staff supervisor choose a destination for the upcoming academic year. Places selected include Australia, England, France, Greece, Ireland, and New Zealand. A group of students are currently travelling to Italy and the next destination is Spain.

This year's club presidents—Erin Willis, interior design senior, and Erin Grabosky, studio art junior—say the Overseas Travel Club pushes people to get out of their comfort zone. Travelling far, and often with a new group of people, can leave students feeling unsettled. Some club members are travelling for the first time. Students use the experience to broaden their cultural experiences and overcome anxieties, while making lifelong friends.

“Travelling long distances brings people together,” says Willis. “I went into the club not knowing anyone and now I talk to its members every day.”

Overseas Travel Club not only do students become close friends through the club, they also become experienced travelers and mentors for the first-time travelers in the club. Attributes of the Overseas Travel Club are that an individual can join anytime, and the trips are open not only to students, but also to the whole college community. In addition, it is not necessary to be a committed member of the club to take part in the trips, but club members do get the benefit of helping to choose future trips.

Students who want to take part in the club, but feel they cannot afford the trips can use club-sponsored fundraisers to help offset travel expenses. These fundraisers help students who need financial support to participate in a trip.

The Overseas Travel Club is the perfect club for anyone with the travel bug looking to experience a new country, or for students who have never traveled and want the experience in a safe, guided, group setting. Students looking to expand their horizons, meet like-minded individuals, and experience new cultures could benefit greatly from the Overseas Travel Club.

Students interested in the club or upcoming trips can email club presidents Erin Willis(ecwillis @ cazenovia. edu)or Erin Grabosky(ekgrabosky@ cazenovia. edu). Club advisor HEOP Associate Director Sheila Marsh(smarsh@cazenovia. edu)is also available to answer questions.
