Excursion: Two Poems
At grand occasions I often feel disconsolate,
it is hard for a sojourner to have his wish.
Deep feelings rise from the heart of me,
this distinctive tune stirs melancholy.
I put aside my cup to quit the amusement,
and roam around in the lush forest.
The wind is sighing in the valley,
the heavenly road is dark and dim.
In my despondence I forget to go back,
weeping, sighing, and letting tears soak my robes.
The season changes, the weather settles,
the autumn wind wafts clear and cool.
Living in leisure I feel disconsolate,
so I ride in my cart to visit friends.
We wander together along the stream,
and climb the heights of the city wall.
To the east we gaze at the farmers’ f ields,
and backward we cast our gaze at the homesteads.
The beautiful trees are shedding their green leaves,
scarlet blossoms fall from fragrant bushes.
Alas, both sun and moon are galloping away,
and my life will follow them into the west.
If I don’t accomplish our goals right now,
what will be written about on the bronze?
Clinging to this thought I return to my bedroom,
with deep emotion I chant the ancient classics.
While our Lord1 is still among us,
I would establish my virtue and fame.
1 Our Lord refers to Cao Cao.
