Installing from a bootable USB
Installing from bootable USB associates with clean install. That is because the computer needs to be booted from a bootable installation media and not from the hard disk drive (HDD). As explained in Chapter 1, Preparing for Installation, in the Determining and creating appropriate installation media section, usually a DVD disc and USB flash drive act as an installation media. With that in mind, the clean install requires setting up the boot order in basic input/output system (BIOS) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), depending on which program your computer uses. To access BIOS or UEFI, different keys on a keyboard can be used, however, that very much depends on the manufacturer of your computer's BIOS or UEFI. The most frequently used keys are Del and F2, although it does not mean that you should not try keys like F9, F10, and F11. Once you access the BIOS or UEFI, you will be presented with the following boot options:
- Boot from DVD: Prior to accessing the BIOS or UEFI, insert the bootable DVD disc into the DVD drive. Access the BIOS or UEFI, set the DVD as the first boot option, and then save the changes and exit the BIOS or UEFI.
- Boot from generic USB: Similar to the bootable DVD disc, plug in your bootable USB flash drive prior to accessing BIOS or UEFI. Access the BIOS or UEFI, set the USB flash drive as the first boot option, and then save the changes and exit the BIOS or UEFI.
- Boot over network: This does not require bootable installation media. Instead, it requires the Windows Deployment Services (WDS), which has bootable and installation images. Access the BIOS or UEFI, and set boot over the network as the first boot option. Save the changes and exit the BIOS or UEFI.
Since, in our case, we are using a bootable USB flash drive as an installation media, then once the computer restarts, it will attempt to boot from the bootable USB. Once it boots, Windows 10 installation files are loaded into the RAM memory from a bootable USB flash drive.
