"Yin-Yang"for two pianos.
Composed in Spring 1992, my main idea was to combine ancient Chinese culture with the modern European music writing techniques. This idea allowed me to create a piece with the traditional cultureas a base, equipped with today's modern techniques, reflecting my own composition style.
Yin-Yang is the ancient Chinese philosophy about nature. It considers the universe as a whole. Yin-Yang evokes the dynamics resulting from both the opposition and the attraction of the opposites, driving principle of the evolution of the universe and the culture of humanity.
In this piece, I used two main elements:"staccato" and "legato". For staccato, I tried to find the maximum variations in rhythms, pitches, chords and dynamics. For the legato, I used avery large amount of appoggiaturas, which I called "multiple appoggiaturas". In general, these are used as ornaments, but in my composition, they are considered as constitutive elements, their quantity and importance have been amplified, their locations are made more flexible, they can either precede or follow the main notes. The result gives a great degree of freedom to the music but it is about a controlled freedom.
Through the development of this piece, these two elements appear sometimes separated, sometimes united, showing themselves at the same time in opposition and in harmony, contrary and complementary.
As the music unfolds and deploys,I used the first sentence of a folk melody "The Yellow River Fishermen Song" from the Northern Shaanxi region, by way of signature, reflecting my native region and my cultural origin.
