Reading
Work in pairs. Read the short passage about the rules for using formal titles. Then work with your partner on the following questions. Finally come up with some examples of people's identity or jobs so that you can call them by these titles.
In Western countries people use different titles to refer to other people.Men are usually called Mister (or Mr.in writing).Women can have different titles.A woman can choose her title. If she is married, she can call herself Mrs.or Ms.(pronounced"missis"or"miss").If a woman is single, she can call herself Miss or Ms.
When do we use Sir or Madam? We often use these titles in formal letters.Sometimes we hear people addressing others as Sir or Madam. These titles are formal terms and convey the respect. So how do we know when to use them?
If you don't know someone,it's appropriate to use these titles. It is considered a polite way to address somebody.
Activity 1
Think of jobs, identities and situations which, according to the text, require the use of a formal title.Remember that these may vary between China and the United States,Australia or Britain.Do not worry if you are not sure of the exact word in English. If time allows, use the Internet to check your assumptions.
Activity 2
Work with another pair of students and compare your lists.Do you have the same jobs, identities or situations?
Notes
Sir / Madam is mostly used in places like shops or restaurants, where services are offered to the public.
In universities,we address teachers as "Professor".
In government,we use the job to refer to people:Major,Secretary,Justice, etc.
In the army and the police,we use ranks:General,Officer, etc.
We use some names when we refer to professions — Doctor,Professor, etc.
In writing,we tend to use Mr./Mrs.(if we know the name of the person)or Sir/Madam(if we don't know the name of the person).
Note that when using Mr.or Mrs.we use the surname, not the given name("Mr.Stuart",not "Mr.John").
Writing
Please fill in the table with appropriate responses to the formal and informal greetings.
