万用表达一览

万用表达详解
1. expect some/expect there to be
释 There's bound to happen/It wouldn't surprise me 预期会有一些……，期望会有……
例 I expect some opposition to my proposal.
我预计我的提议会遭到一些人的反对。
2. a whale of a
释 used to express something huge/wonderful/exaggerated [美国口语]了不起的，非常大的，巨大的；极好的，精彩的
例 We had a whale of a time.
我们玩得很开心。
3. agree on one thing
释 agree on one issue/point 完全同意一件事，在某事上意见一致
例 We can agree on one thing. The service here is outstanding.我们的意见有一点是一致的，这里的服务的确很周到。
4. That's for sure.
释 That's certain．这是肯定的。
例 After their despicable behavior, they won't be welcome back here anymore. That's for sure!
做出这种卑劣行径，以后这里肯定不会再欢迎他们的。这是肯定的！
5. with little or no experience
释 almost no experience 很少或几乎没有经验的
例 They have little or no experience managing teenagers. The youth center really had no business hiring them in the first place.
对于管理青少年，他们几乎没有任何经验。少年中心一开始就不应该聘用他们。
6. some prospect of
释 likelihood/some hope for/expectation of 预期有……
例 The contractors realized early on that there would be some prospect of danger from local pirates.
承包商很早就意识到当地有海盗，会带来一定的隐患。
7. live to tell about it
释 survive long enough to tell the story/talk about the events 幸存下来后，讲述那段故事
例 He survived the ordeal and lived to tell about it.
他经受了严酷的考验，最后幸存下来，讲述了那段故事。
8. turn to
释 ask/look to (for help) 转向，注意力转移到
例 I usually turn to my parents for help when I need solid advice.当我需要可靠的建议时，我通常会向父母寻求帮助。
9. You have a point there.
释 You make a reasonable argument．你说得挺有道理。
例 Linda: You need to drop everything for a few hours every day, just to reflect on things.
琳达：每天你应该抛开其他一切事情，花几个小时去思考。
Mike: You have a point there!

实用对话场景
Linda: When I think about adventure, I think of having a good time. But I also expect there to be some risk involved.
Mike: When I think of adventure, I think of hiking in the wilderness or catching a whale of a fish.
Linda:So we can agree on one thing.Adventure isn't dull.
Mike:That's for sure!For most people,adventures usually involve going to remote places with little or no experience,or going to far-away places with some prospect of danger or risk.
Linda:When I think of adventure, I think of novels like Robinson Crusoe,The Three Musketeers,Jack London stories,and of course Indiana Jones and James Bond(007)movies.
Mike: I do too. All of these stories or movies involve heroism, defeating evil,or overcoming adversity and living to tell about it.
Linda: I think in our daily lives, we all long for some kind of adventure. Movies and TV programs are full of characters engaged in some kind of adventure.
Mike: I think you're right. Many people grow up today in very sheltered environments.
Linda: I can understand why. There are some very unpleasant things we'd prefer not to be exposed to.
Mike: Then there are the very unsavory people we'd rather not know.
Linda:A sheltered life can get very dull,very fast.No wonder we turn to movies or read adventure stories.It's safer than the real world.
Mike:You have a point there.
琳达：当我想到冒险，我会想那是一段愉快的旅程，但也预料到会有一些风险。
迈克：而我想到冒险，就会想起在荒野中徒步旅行或捉一条巨大的鱼。
琳达：所以我们都同意一点，就是冒险并不乏味。
迈克：那是肯定的。对于大多数人来说，冒险（探险）通常意味着很少或几乎没有相关旅行经验而去偏远的地方，或者去可能有些危险的遥远的地方。

琳达：受保护的生活很快会变得非常枯燥。难怪我们会投向电影或阅读历险故事的怀抱了，这比现实世界安全多了。
迈克：你说得有道理。
